PA Treasury's Unclaimed Property Program Offers Unclaimed Property to Residents

Newly Reported Properties, Not Yet Advertised

February 16, 2016

Dear Representative/Senator,

Roughly one in ten Pennsylvanians has unclaimed property and one easy way you can help your constituents put money back in their wallets is to refer them to the Pennsylvania Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Program.

Currently, Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Return Team is looking for the owners of $3 billion in unclaimed property – abandoned and forgotten items such as bank accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, proceeds from safe deposit boxes, and much more.

Since the legislative amendment in July 2014, which reduced the dormancy period from five to three years, over $1 billion has been reported to Treasury in the last two reporting years. In addition, Treasury has returned over $300 million during the same period. Please note, in connection with the reduced dormancy period, there is an increased likelihood – and opportunity – to locate and contact rightful owners so that property may be claimed. By way of example, Treasury has received a record number of claims during this period.

Below you will find a link to a list containing all the newly reported unclaimed property that has not yet been advertised. This database can be searched by last name, city, zip code, and county, giving you and your staff the ability to reach out to your constituents who have unclaimed property. It is important to note that Treasury maintains the discretion to determine entitlement of any unclaimed property funds. You may search for unclaimed property and assist your constituents with filing a claim at Treasury’s Web site.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact our Legislative Affairs’ Office at (717) 705-0577.

Respectfully,

Joseph M. Torsella
Pennsylvania Treasurer

The Pennsylvania Treasury is an independent department of state government led by the state treasurer, who is elected every four years. The department's primary duty is to safeguard and manage the state's public funds. It invests state money to generate income on behalf of the citizens of Pennsylvania, reviews and processes payments for state government agencies, and serves as custodian of more than $100 billion in state funds. Key Treasury programs include Unclaimed Property, PA 529 College Savings Program and the Board of Finance and Revenue.
