Slope Work to Begin on June 10 Above Worthington Avenue in Jefferson Hills

This phase, which is required to prevent future landslides, includes construction of a lateral support concrete lagging wall, grading, and additional seeding of the hillside. The work is expected to end in October – at which point the road will be completely reopened to traffic for the first time since a landslide occurred there on June 14, 2018.

After the landslide, the road was completely closed between Route 51 and Oneida Drive until December 4, 2018. It was then reopened to traffic except for one lane at the site of the landslide. That restriction will remain during the upcoming work. Stop signs will continue to be used to control traffic where the road becomes a single lane, and drivers are urged to use caution in the area.

This phase of the project will cost $306,059 and is being done by A. Merante Contracting, Inc., of Pittsburgh.

The first phase of the project was completed on Feb. 25, 2019, by Frank J. Zottola Construction, Inc., of Butler and included removal of unstable material, installation of spring drains, topsoil procurement and placement, seeding and mulching, erosion and sediment control management, reestablishment of roadway drainage, and exploratory excavation and surveying.
